Transition to Adulthood Evaluations
(Psychoeducational & Career Guidance for Young Adults)

Transitioning into adulthood can be an exciting time for young people, but it also comes with complex and challenging changes that can leave the young person with questions. These major changes, such as independent living, first-time employment, or going off to college, can be hard for many people first stepping into adulthood. Adolescence to adulthood evaluations help map out and plan the path for your child to make this transition easier. At Geo Psychological Testing, we offer psychoeducational and career guidance services in The Woodlands to young adults to help guide them through this phase of life.

What is Assessed in Adolescence to Adulthood Evaluations

Cognitive & Learning Profiles

Understanding how your young person learns will greatly benefit you when helping them lay out a plan for the future. Through cognitive testing, we can get greater insight into their executive functioning and skills by showing where their strengths and weaknesses lie when it comes to planning, time management, organization, and verbal and nonverbal reasoning. This is crucial for understanding the best way your child learns, what types of jobs or activities they would be most successful at and enjoy, and what actions and strategies we can put in place to support them in their adult life.

Career Interests

There are so many career options and paths available to young adults, and while they probably know generally what their interests are, they may not know how to translate that into a career path. Helping them identify their career interests and aptitudes offers clarity and confidence as they step forward into the future. During this portion of the assessment, we use interest inventories to help the young adult determine what type of work environment they would like, what types of tasks they would enjoy, and how their personality and strengths could thrive in certain careers.

Emotional Skills

Emotional functioning and the young person’s ability to advocate for themselves are some of the most important components of adolescence to adulthood evaluations. As the young person becomes more independent, they begin to take on more responsibility and ownership of their own lives, resulting in the need for coping strategies, social confidence, and stress management. The emotional skills and mental health portion of the evaluation tests your young person’s mood patterns, emotional regulation, and how their emotional well-being could impact their daily functioning.

Life Skills & Adaptive Functioning

The adaptive functioning and life skills portion of the assessment evaluates if your young person is ready to manage the daily tasks and responsibilities of adulthood. Some of the areas this portion tests for include budgeting and money management, scheduling, personal transportation, medication and health management, and general independent living. Difficulties with executive functioning can make these areas challenging, even for highly intelligent young adults.

The Process for Adolescence to Adulthood Evaluations

Consultation

The first step in the process is to schedule a consultation. During the consultation, we’ll discuss goals, medical and educational history, and any concerns you or your young person may have. Afterward, we will schedule an appointment for testing.

Testing Sessions

The testing involved in the transition to adulthood evaluations includes questionnaires, career inventories, interviews, and standardized tests. We will also gather input from parents and teachers if needed.

Feedback & Reports

After the testing, we will put together a detailed report and recommendations for a future path. This will include next steps, resources, career recommendations, and cognitive, learning, and emotional profiles. These reports provide valuable insight into a young person’s strengths and challenges, helping to create a transition plan that identifies the environments in which they are most likely to thrive. It also offers resources so families and young adults can advocate for themselves if accommodations or services are needed.
