Tools for Students with Learning Disabilities - Geo Psychological Testing

Students with learning disabilities do not process or retain information the same way other students do. Sometimes they need a little extra help! Here are a few tools for students with learning disabilities:

Reading guides

Many children with learning disabilities (or even ADHD) struggle to focus while reading. Reading guides could be the perfect solution to keep your child on track! Reading guides are transparent slips that can be placed over a page to highlight one line of text at a time. This transparent slip blurs all text except for the one line being read. As your child reads, the reading guide can easily glide down the page. With reading guides, students are not distracted by a large body of text and can focus on what they’re reading and actually absorb the information.

Audio devices

Many children with learning disabilities struggle taking notes or retaining information while reading silently. Audio players and recorders could be of aid if your child is an auditory learner. There are audio recorders that not only record but convert speech to text. If permitted, your child could record lessons and have these transcribed into notes with the use of a recorder. Additionally, audio players in the form of e-books could be beneficial if your child needs to hear the material as they are reading a physical book.

Pencil and pen grips

Many students with learning disabilities struggle with writing and penmanship. Pencil grips are ribbed rubber sleeves you can slide on the end of a pencil that allows the child to maintain a better grip of their pencil while they write. With a firmer grip and steadier hand, your child may find that writing comes easier to them with a pencil grip.

Although learning disabilities, like dyslexia and dysgraphia, are typically life-long conditions, early diagnosis and support can help a child reduce their difficulties and better succeed later in life–in both an academic and social environment.
