What is an IQ Score?
IQ, or intelligence quotient, is a measure of a person’s reasoning ability. In short, an IQ score is supposed to gauge how well someone can use information and logic to answer questions or make predictions.
What are IQ Tests?
IQ tests measure both short-term and long-term memory. They also measure how well people can solve puzzles and recall information they’ve heard – and how quickly. Many IQ tests may also consider several other factors, including genetics, socio-economic status, academic involvement, culture, and race. IQ tests can:
-
- Identify a child that may benefit from special education programs
- Identify a child that would excel in a fast-paced, gifted education program
- Determine a child’s weakest skills
- Determine a child’s strongest skills
- Determine a child’s memory capacity and capability
- Predict how well a child may succeed both personally and academically
- Identify structural inequalities that have affected a child’s development (ex. the effects of malnutrition on brain health)
