A mental health disability is a diagnosed mental health condition/disorder that substantially limits a person’s capability to perform major life activities such as learning, working, communicating, and taking care of oneself.

Specific examples of mental health conditions/disorders that can lead to a disability include:

    • Depression
    • Anxiety
    • Bioplar disorder
    • Schizophrenia
    • Obsessive compulsive disorder
    • Dementia
    • Cognitive disorders

    • Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Mental health disabilities can be caused by various factors such as genetics, psychological, work-related and environmental factors. Symptoms can vary from person to person, and the cause and recurrence of disorder/disability can be unpredictable.

There are many treatments to assist people with mental health disabilities such as a combination of medication, counseling, tutoring and a variety of therapies. These individuals may also be eligible for support services at work or school and benefits from the state.
