Learning Disability Testing for Children
Understanding and addressing learning disabilities early on in your child’s academic development can prevent many self-esteem issues and frustration that children with undiagnosed learning disabilities face. Testing for these types of disabilities gives parents and teachers a clear understanding of how the child learns and what accommodations are needed. With the right support, children with learning disabilities thrive both academically and socially. At the Geo Psychological Testing, we offer learning disability testing for children in The Woodlands and the Houston area to provide this clarity.
What are Learning Disabilities?
Learning disabilities are often neurological and not related to intelligence or effort. It is estimated that 1 in 5 children in the US has a learning disability or attention issue. Learning disabilities do not define a child, but they do highlight the need for support and understanding so that the child can reach their full potential.
Common Learning Disabilities and Signs of Each
Dyslexia: This is a learning disorder that affects how the brain processes language and phonological processing. It affects reading and spelling accuracy and comprehension. Common signs include difficulty recognizing letters, trouble sounding out words, difficulty spelling, avoiding reading aloud, and trouble with reading comprehension.
Dysgraphia: This learning disability affects a child’s handwriting and fine motor skills. Children with dysgraphia often have messy handwriting or trouble writing in a straight line, inconsistent spacing when writing, trouble forming letters, spelling mistakes, and avoid writing tasks.
Dyscalculia: Affecting a child’s ability to understand numbers, dyscalculia impacts math reasoning and number sense. Children often have difficulty recognizing numbers, reverse numbers, find it difficult to count, struggle with math problems, and have trouble memorizing math facts.
Auditory Processing Disorder (APD): While APD affects how sounds are processed, it is often not a hearing issue. APD makes it difficult for the brain to process sounds. This can make it difficult for the child to follow spoken instructions, have trouble distinguishing between similar sounds or understanding speech, especially in noisy environments, and misunderstand words.
Visual Processing Disorder (VPD): This disorder makes it difficult for the child to process visual information, even though there are no vision issues. This can make it difficult for the child to copy from the board, lose their place while reading, have trouble telling left and right, reverse letters, and become frustrated during visual tasks.
The Process of Learning Disability Testing for Children
Before the official testing with the child, we will gather information from you as the parent and your child’s teacher. This will include a survey and/or interview. This will help us understand how your child interacts and learns in different environments. A learning disability evaluation is made up of different parts, including cognitive or IQ testing, academic achievement testing, executive function and processing assessments, and behavior and emotional testing. These assessments will evaluate your child’s problem-solving skills, memory, reading, and writing skills. The behavioral and emotional screening will help us rule out other factors that could be affecting your child’s learning, such as attention or anxiety disorders.
Before the testing, it’s important to explain to your child why they are being evaluated in terms that they can understand. Explain that this is to help you and their teachers understand how they learn best, so you can provide them with the best learning tools. Also, ensure they know this is not a test that they can fail. It is just about giving us insights into how they learn.
Why Learning Disability Testing for Children is Important
When a learning disability goes undiagnosed, it can lead to anxiety, feelings of inadequacy, and falling behind in school. Understanding a child’s learning disabilities and providing them with the proper tools reduces the frustration they may feel around school and learning and boosts their confidence.
