3 Surprising Signs of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
Autism is a spectrum disorder, meaning its signs and symptoms vary from person to person. Here are a few surprising signs of autism spectrum disorder (ASD):
Gastrointestinal issues
It is actually quite common for children with autism to have gastrointestinal issues, such as constipation, diarrhea, nausea, etc. Some studies suggest that the bacteria in the GI tract could be different for autistic children, but there is no significant evidence that supports this theory.
Some studies suggest the presence of a CHD8 genetic mutation could explain GI issues in autistic children. The CHD8 mutation is common in people with autism and can cause dysmorphic facial features, GI issues, and sleep problems. Sleep problems can cause GI disturbances and vice versa.
Seizures
About 25% of children with autism also have a seizure disorder like epilepsy. The connection between autism and epilepsy is puzzling, as both disorders are often of unknown origin. But children with autism are more likely to have a seizure disorder and vice versa. Genetics and environmental factors could play a part, as well as a traumatic pregnancy or birth.
Epilepsy may not be so obvious in children with autism, as the two disorders share similar physical symptoms. If you are concerned your autistic child may have epilepsy, schedule an MRI for evaluation.
Irregular sleep patterns
Whether it be falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking frequently, autistic children are 40-80% more likely to experience sleep problems than neurotypical children. Given the nature of ASD symptoms, a lack of sleep can be troubling. Sleeplessness only exacerbates the hyperactivity, social impairment, and emotional dysregulation that comes with autism.
Developing a strict bedtime routine and making your child’s sleep space comfortable could help them fall asleep and stay asleep. Additionally, melatonin is said to improve sleep for people with autism.
