5 Psychological Evaluations for Children
Is your child struggling in school or displaying behavioral issues? At Geo Psychological Testing, our professionals specialize in psychological evaluations for children. Here are 5 types of services we offer for children:
Autism Testing
Autism can be characterized by impaired social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech problems, and nonverbal communication. There are varying degrees of Autism. Autism is mostly influenced by a combination of genetic and environmental factors.
The timing and intensity of symptoms may vary. Some children may show signs of Autism as infants, while others may display symptoms as toddlers. Some children display a variety of symptoms, while others display very few. Therefore, testing is crucial for proper diagnosis.
ADHD Testing
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) causes atypical neurological development and can be characterized by impulsivity, inability to focus, fidgeting, and more. ADHD can affect a child’s academic performance, social interactions, relationships, and emotional regulation.
Parents and teachers may notice signs of ADHD when a child is very young. It’s normal for a child to be restless and impulsive. However, children with ADHD do not typically outgrow these symptoms. If your child displays these patterns of behavior, proper testing may be necessary.
Learning Disability Testing
Children with learning disabilities may have processing problems that interfere with learning basic skills, such as reading, writing, and math. These can also interfere with higher level skills, including organization, time management, reasoning, memory, and attention.
Some learning disabilities include dyslexia and dysgraphia, which are both typically life-long conditions. However, these difficulties can be managed through early diagnosis and educational support.
Oppositional Defiant Disorder Testing
Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) is characterized by a pattern of hostile, disobedient, and defiant behaviors by children toward authority figures. Children with ODD may struggle with social isolation, interpersonal conflict, and academic performance.
As children develop, it is perfectly normal and age-appropriate for them to test boundaries. However, children with ODD will display disobedient behavior more often. There may also be a significant difference in how the signs and symptoms present themselves depending on age and gender. Therefore, proper testing is necessary.
Emotional Disturbance Testing
According to IDEA, an emotional disturbance is a condition and disability in which a child exhibits one or more specific characteristics over a long period of time and to a marked degree that adversely affects a child’s educational performance.
As children learn to self-regulate, they may display behaviors of emotional disturbance. However, those with emotional disturbances will continue these behaviors over long periods of time. Therefore, proper testing is necessary for accurate diagnosis and ongoing support.
