What is Schizophrenia?
Schizophrenia is a mental disorder that affects one’s perception of reality. There are approximately 3.2 million Americans with Schizophrenia. If this disorder is so prevalent, why is it so misunderstood? What is Schizophrenia? Geo Psychological Testing breaks down the symptoms, common misconceptions, and treatments:
Symptoms
Schizophrenia can be characterized by a series of hallucinations, delusions, and disordered thinking/behavior. These symptoms may vary in severity, but can affect one’s ability to function.
A schizophrenic’s hallucinations usually involve seeing or hearing things that do not exist, but can also affect any of their senses. People with Schizophrenia may live in delusion, holding false beliefs that lack foundation and are not based in reality. Their ability to communicate effectively may be impaired. They may also display abnormal motor behavior. Generally, these symptoms can cause social withdrawal, difficulty sleeping, depression, and more.
Misconceptions
Many believe schizophrenics are violent, aggressive, and have split personalities. These beliefs are simply false. With a tendency to withdraw from others, schizophrenics are more likely to hurt themselves or be harmed than they are to cause harm. Though the term “Schizophrenia” stems from a Greek word meaning “split mind”, schizophrenics have only one personality; those who believe schizophrenics have split personalities are simply confusing the disorder for Dissociative Identity Disorder (Aruma).
Treatments
Given the nature of the disorder, Schizophrenia often requires lifelong treatment. In most cases, antipsychotic medications are prescribed to those struggling with this disorder. Psychosocial therapies may also benefit schizophrenics. Hospitalization may be necessary to ensure the patient’s safety during crisis periods.
