5 Misconceptions About Borderline Personality Disorder
Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is an emotional dysregulation disorder that is widely misunderstood. In our latest article, we break down a few of the most common misconceptions about borderline personality disorder:
BPD is rare
Because there is such stigma surrounding BPD, many believe this disorder is rare. However, this is simply not true. More than 14 million Americans have BPD. Furthermore, BPD accounts for about 20% of psychiatric inpatients (McLean). This disorder is actually more common than schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.
BPD is caused by severe childhood trauma
Many people believe that BPD is caused by physical, emotional, or sexual abuse in one’s childhood. While these factors may contribute to the development of mental illnesses, there is no evidence to support this claim. In fact, 10-20% of BPD patients report having no traumatic experiences as children (Delray Center). Like most mental illnesses, doctors cannot determine the true cause of BPD.
Only women can have BPD
This is absolutely false! Though women are 3x more likely to be diagnosed with BPD, men can still have BPD. In a recent study (Clearview Treatment Programs), it was found that BPD affects 6.2% of women and 5.6% of men — and that only accounts for people who have been diagnosed. This preconceived disparity is simply a myth!
Only adults have BPD
For many people with mental illness, symptoms do not manifest until adulthood. However, BPD can occur in children as well and its symptoms may arise in childhood. Many professionals are against early diagnosis though, as it could be risky to diagnose a child whose personality has not yet fully developed. However, in order to manage BPD symptoms and learn to cope, early intervention is necessary.
There are no treatments for BPD
BPD has such a bad rap that many believe the disorder simply can’t be treated. However, this is the furthest thing from the truth. BPD can be difficult to manage, but with dialectical behavioral therapy or cognitive behavioral therapy, BPD patients can learn to manage their symptoms and cope, improving their overall quality of life.
