What is a Personality Disorder?
Personality disorders are characterized by a series of behaviors, thoughts, and feelings that deviate from the norm, persist over time, and prevent one from functioning. There are 10 types of personality disorders. Geo Psychological Testing breaks down a few of the most common personality disorders and their symptoms:
Borderline personality disorder
BPD can be characterized by a pattern of impulsivity, difficulty managing emotions, poor self-image, and unstable personal relationships. People with BPD may feel empty and fear abandonment as a result of their poor self-image and unstable relationships. Intense displays of anger and suicide attempts are common in people with BPD.
Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder
There is a common misconception that OCPD is simply the desire to be clean and organized. However, this is not the case. OCPD can be characterized by a rigid adherence and preoccupation with control and orderliness. People with OCPD are excessively detail-oriented, often inflexible in their values, and unwavering in their efforts to adhere to rules/regulations.
Narcissistic personality disorder
The word “narcissist” is often thrown around to describe someone with an inflated sense of self. However, narcissistic personality disorder is so much more than that. Someone with NPD craves admiration and validation, though they walk through life with a sense of entitlement and self-importance. People with NPD lack empathy for others, making it very easy for them to manipulate and take advantage of other people.
Antisocial personality disorder
Antisocial personality disorder and narcissistic personality disorder are very similar. However, people with antisocial personality disorder show a lack of regard toward social norms and the rights of others. People with antisocial personality disorder are also known for their deceptive, impulsive nature.
Avoidant personality disorder
People with avoidant personality disorder often have poor self-image, as they are more reserved and fear rejection and criticism. People with this disorder are extremely shy and feel inadequate in most areas of their lives; these feelings often cause people with this disorder to avoid connecting with others unless they are certain they are liked.
