4 Types of Diagnostic Testing
Diagnostic testing allows psychologists to better understand a person and their behavior. There are 4 types of diagnostic testing: clinical interviews, IQ testing, personality assessments, and behavioral assessments. Geo Psychological Testing has broken down the four types:
Clinical Interviews
Clinical interviews are more commonly known as intake or admission interviews. During these interviews, the mental health professional will gather background information on the client. This personal history and family data will allow the mental health professionals to form initial impressions before conducting further testing. These interviews allow professionals to identify what steps should be taken next to address the client’s issues or concerns.
IQ Testing
IQ testing measures a person’s intelligence quotient; IQ testing measures several components of a person’s general intelligence. These components include verbal comprehension, reasoning, memory, processing, and more. Composed of a series of questions and tasks, these tests are great for identifying cognitive strengths and deficits, and can be administered to people of all age groups.
Personality Assessments
Over the course of our lives, there are many factors that influence our personalities. Through a series of questionnaires, personality tests allow psychologists to better understand an individual, taking into account their life experiences and other factors that may have shaped who they are. Personality assessments can provide insight into the client’s relationships with others and themselves.
Behavioral Assessments
Behavioral assessments allow psychologists to better understand and explore a person’s behavior, the thought process behind said behavior, and potential triggers. Due to the nature of this testing, psychologists often perform this assessment in a natural setting and observe their client. By observing and taking notes, the psychologist can form suggestions for improved behavior or diagnosis.
