Psychological Evaluations: The Process of In-School Observations
When it comes to diagnosing learning disabilities, autism, ADHD, and other psychological disorders, sometimes in-school observations are necessary. How are these observations beneficial? Geo Psychological Testing explains the process:
Natural environments provide better insight
One of the best ways psychologists can determine whether a child has learning disabilities or other cognitive disorders is by observing them in their natural environment. In a classroom setting, there are up to 30 other students — which means there are a lot of noises and distractions. In a classroom setting, psychologists can measure a student’s ability to focus and absorb information with outside distractions.
Classroom observations allow psychologists to observe a child’s daily routine, classroom structure, social interactions, and more. They witness firsthand how a child responds to routine and structure, how the child interacts with students and teachers, whether/how the student participates in classroom activities, etc.
Psychologists can make realistic, appropriate recommendations
When observing a child in their natural environment, a psychologist can identify the child’s specific strengths and weaknesses. With this information, they can make recommendations that are specific to the child’s needs.
For instance, if a child is struggling with focus and attention issues, a psychologist can determine through observation what factors may be affecting the child’s focus. The psychologist can then collaborate with parents and teachers to better accommodate the child’s needs. The child may require more visual aids or need to move seats.
If the psychologist identifies signs or patterns indicative of a cognitive disorder, they can also offer recommendations for the appropriate treatment or therapy.
