How Much Sleep is Best for Your Children?
While we all know the importance of a good night of sleep, the benefits can be much more apparent in children. Studies show getting too much or not enough sleep can be linked to obesity and other health issues in both children and adults. Learn more about the optimal number of hours for your health based on age:
Newborns
For the first couple of weeks, newborn babies typically need to sleep between 15 – 16 hours per day. This may vary, but the babies’ circadian rhythm has not yet developed at this stage, leading to seemingly random sleep schedules.
From month 1 to 12, babies average 14 – 15 hours of sleep. During this time, it is best to begin introducing a schedule to help train the child to follow a sleep pattern for optimal rest and development.
Toddlers and Children
Children between the ages of 3 and 12 should be receiving 10 – 12 hours of sleep per day. As the child gets older less is required but it is still an important part of health and wellness.
Teenagers and Adults
On average, teens require 8 – 9 hours but are the least likely to get their recommended amount. Adults sleep the least amount of time, needing an average of only 7 hours a day.
In order to get an optimal night’s sleep, follow a consistent bedtime routine each night and wake up at the same time each morning. Establish a calming bedtime routine, avoid rigorous exercise before bed, and make your bedroom as dark, quiet, and cool as possible.
