4 Common Therapeutic Treatment Modalities

4 Common Therapeutic Treatment Modalities - Geo Psychological Testing

Whether you’re searching for counseling or treatment for mental illness, there are a wide variety of therapeutic treatment modalities that will aid in your coping and recovery. Geo Psychological Testing breaks down four of the most common modalities:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT is probably the most common therapeutic modality. In CBT, the client is challenged to assess their inner monologue and thoughts, build awareness, focus on the things they can control, and be present. In CBT, people make the connection between their thoughts and circumstances (i.e. “Are these thoughts hurting or helping me?”). This form of therapy is commonly used to treat conditions like depression and anxiety.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

DBT is designed for people who struggle with emotional dysregulation, such as those with Borderline Personality Disorder or Histrionic Personality Disorder. For those who struggle with these personality disorders, overreaction and mood instability are common, making it difficult to maintain healthy relationships. DBT is used to self-regulate in moments of crisis.

Psychodynamic Therapy

Our earliest years and memories can be the most formative. Often, the struggles we face in the present moment can be connected to what has happened in our past — and that’s exactly what Psychodynamic Therapy explores. Psychodynamic Therapy looks at a person’s family background; is there a history of abuse, alcoholism, parental divorce, etc. that could have possibly shaped the person they are today? In making connections between the past and present, Psychodynamic Therapy can explain present behavior.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) or Trauma Therapy

Trauma is stored in the brain and nervous system, and can affect one’s ability to function in their daily life. EMDR or Trauma Therapy allows people to process traumatic memories through tapping, eye movements, tones, etc. EMDR uses bilateral stimulation, which activates the brain’s processing system to process the memory and store the information in a new way. Once processed and restored, these traumatic events are no longer as triggering as they once were.
