3 Ways to Support Your Child’s Mental Health
There is a common misconception that only adults struggle with their mental health. However, mental health issues can arise in early childhood, as well. Here are a few ways you can support your child’s mental health:
Be aware of sudden changes in mood or behavior
The first step to helping your child work through their mental health issues is to identify when something isn’t right. When someone is experiencing mental health issues, there are often several tell-tale signs they are going through something. If your child is struggling, you may notice changes in their personality and temperament. Your child may also experience fatigue, social withdrawal, and difficulty concentrating and expressing emotions. Be aware of these changes, check in with your child, and express your concern.
Encourage open dialogue
Many people who struggle with their mental health will admit that it is often an isolating feeling, especially when those around them cannot relate to their struggles. As a parent, even if you cannot relate to your child’s struggles, it is important that you encourage them to speak openly about their struggles. It is crucial that you practice judgment-free active listening. If your child feels any shame or judgment around their experiences, they are less likely to open up.
Seek professional help if necessary
As much as we like to believe we have all the answers as parents, sometimes our children need more help than we are capable of giving. If you feel your child could benefit from professional help, ask them if this is something they would be willing to try.
